WHAT IS ORTHOVISC?

The living body has natural hyaluronan (natural chemical) present within the joint spaces.  This slippery and thick fluid behaves like a lubricant, as well as shock absorber allowing the joints to function properly.  With adequate cushioning, it is easy to walk or play or work.  Aging brings about a reduction of this substance, and this is when the aches and pains start!

HOW DOES ORTHOVISC WORK?

When the knees receive direct Orthovisc injections, there is relief from pain.  The cycle of treatment consists of weekly injections, for a total of three to four weeks.  The healthcare professional uses an aseptic technique.   The relief from pain may be experienced for at least six months.  Gradually, with repeated treatments, the cushioning qualities of the joints are restored.

OF NOTE—

Allergies are meant to be reported to your healthcare provider BEFORE starting the treatment.  It is advisable that he/she is aware of them.  Especially of concern is are allergies of birds, such as feathers or eggs or poultry.
There are also certain precautions to be kept in mind once an injection is administered using an aseptic technique.  For the next 48 hours at least, try and avoid strenuous activities.  This could include tennis, standing on your feet for the space of an hour at a time, heavy lifting, or jogging.

Orthovisc is proven safe and effective. In clinical studies, side effects were similar to placebo. The most common side effects were joint pain, back pain, and headache.
Some people experienced pain, swelling, heat rash, itching, bruising, and/or redness in the injection area. Side effects were generally mild and lasted a short time. If any symptoms or other problems occur, you should report it to your doctor.
People who are allergic to hyaluronate products or to bird products, such as eggs, poultry, and feathers, should not use Orthovisc. It should not be used if there are infection or skin diseases in the area of the injection site or joint.
Orthovisc is not a drug. It contains highly concentrated hyaluronan similar to the body’s own natural hyaluronan, which is found in your knee joint. Talk to your doctor about medications you are taking.
The effectiveness of taking more than one course has not been established as yet.
