What is NeoVisc?
NeoVisc is a 1.0% solution of highly purified Sodium Hyaluronate, a natural viscosupplement for the treatment of Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee.  NeoVisc is manufactured by Stellar Pharmaceuticals Inc. and has been clinically available in Canada since 1997.

What does NeoVisc do?
NeoVisc works as a viscosupplement by improving the natural viscosity and elasticity of synovial fluid, thereby increasing lubrication, improving joint mobility and reducing pain.  To illustrate it simply, think of an injection of NeoVisc as putting oil on a rusty hinge.

How is Neovisc administered and how long does it last?
NeoVisc is administrated by a physician through a series of injections into the synovial space of the joint.  Typically one injection is given per week, over a 15 day period for a total of three injections.  The onset of relief varies from patient to patient depending on the severity of the Osteoarthritis.  Some experience improvement after the second injection, while the best results are usually seen 15 to 30 days after the last injection.  Patients with more severe Osteoarthritis may experience greater benefit from a series of five weekly NeoVisc injections.

It is believed that a course of viscosupplementation with Neovisc (Hyaluronate) stimulates cells in joint tissues to produce their own healthy hyaluronate, extending the therapeutic benefit for an average of 6 to 12 months, at which time a repeat treatment of NeoVisc injections should be administered.

Will NeoVisc work for me?
Neovisc works best for patients who are suffering from mild to moderate Osteoarthritis.  Viscosupplement treatments are not appropriate for all OA patients, and should be discussed with your doctor.

Are NeoVisc injections painful?
There may be a mild and short-lasting discomfort during the injection.  It is best to discuss any concerns with your physician and the possible use of a local anaesthetic.

Are there any side effects from NeoVisc?
Hyaluronate is a natural component of synovial fluid and there have been no significant adverse reactions attributable to the high purified Sodium Hyaluronate used in NeoVisc.
However, as with any injection, there may be the occurrence of transient pain at the injection site.  Should the injected joint become swollen, or remain painful for more than twelve hours, contact your physician immediately.

How does NeoVisc compare to other Viscosupplements?
There are no known significant differences in treatment outcome from any of the Hyaluronate products presently available in Canada.  Neovisc, however, is the most cost effective therapy and can cost substantially less than other competitive hyaluronate products.
