SYNVISC | Hylan GF 20 | 3 x 2mL Syringe kit

WHAT IS SYNVISC?
The generic name is Hylan GF 20.  The chemical compounds of this injection are referred to as Hylan Polymers A and B (HYE-lan POL-a-mers A and B).  Hyaluronic acid is the natural lubricant and shock absorber for the joints within the body.  It is a natural chemical that is found as joint or synovial fluid within the joint spaces, and in the joint tissues themselves.  It is thanks to this fluid that we are able to flex our limbs so easily and ensure easy movements!  But all good things do not last forever!  So, aging brings a reduction in the volume of synovial fluid, and an opening for osteoarthritis (OA) to set in.

The general tendency is to opt for conservative treatments in the beginning, like consuming simple pain killers (analgesics) like acetaminophens.  You may even go in for the usage of heat pads or ice packs.  When this non-pharmacological therapy fails to bring relief, the next step is exercise and physical therapy.  The last resort is direct pain-relieving injections!

Developed and manufactured by the Genzyme Corporation, Synvisc injections contain material similar to synovial fluid; so they are re-introducing hyaluronic acid into the body.  As a result, the joints get back their “cushion”, and can function properly!  The best news about Synvisc is that it is effective in all stages of osteoarthritis.  Of course, very severe cases will need patience, because the results will come gradually.

This treatment is also indicated for the following candidates—those who are currently on multiple oral medications; those who cannot go in for knee surgery; and those who are unable to take anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and aspirin.

HOW DOES SYNVISC WORK?
A fine needle is utilized to inject the material directly into the knee joints via an aseptic technique.  Since it has to penetrate the skin and enter the joints, only a trained healthcare professional or a trained nurse can do the job.  As a matter of fact, the existing osteoarthritic synovial fluid is removed from the knee before Synvisc is injected.  This is to ensure that the results are even more effective.

There is a specific cycle of therapy that is followed.  The treatment period is distributed over 15 days.  Three Synvisc injections are administered during this duration—the first one on day 1, second one on day 8, and the third one on day 15.  Thus, there is a 7-day gap between two injections.  The purpose of this is, restoring the lubricating and cushioning qualities of the synovial fluid present within the joints.  Within 8 to 12 weeks after beginning this viscosupplementation therapy, patients experience the greatest relief from pain!  Even more important, movements are much, much easier!

OF NOTE—
In case a sudden emergency makes you miss a dose, then do inform your doctor and ask for advice on what to do next.  As much as possible, stick to the schedule rigidly.

Certain things are best avoided during therapy, such as vitamins, herbal products, over-the-counter medicines, and other personal medicines that you may be using.  However, consult the pharmacist or your doctor in case you need to take anything.  Do not become your own doctor!

There should be temporary suspension of any strenuous or prolonged weightbearing activity for at least 48 hours after each administration of Synovisc injection.  These include strenuous sport, jogging or running, lifting weights, standing on your feet for more than an hour, etc.

This viscosupplementation is a treatment prescribed by a healthcare specialist; it cannot be your personal decision.  Just like other medicines, Synvisc is not meant to be shared with others, and should be kept out of the reach of children.
