BOTOX INJECTIONS | Botulinum Toxin Type A
What is Botox?
Botox is a purified protein derived from Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It is used in the treatment of facial lines and wrinkles during cosmetic procedures. The manufacturer of Botox, Allergan, reports eighteen years of successful clinical usage of the product.
What does Botox do?
Botox is used as a cosmetic agent to combat the signs of aging. When injected into the skin, the Clostridium botulinum bacterium reduces the activity of the facial muscles around which frown lines and wrinkles often appear. This is achieved by temporarily blocking the nerve impulses that make the muscles contract.
How is Botox administered?
Botox is administered through a series of injections of the products over the span of about ten minutes. Each procedure lasts between one and six months, depending on the individual client and the results they achieve. Results are often noticeable within a few days and treatment can be repeated once every four months, if needed. More frequent dosage is not recommended or endorsed by the manufacturer of Botox.
Who can benefit from Botox?
Anyone aged 18 to 65 years old who is experiencing moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, laugh lines, or other tell tale signs of aging can benefit from the use of Botox. People of all walks from life have the treatment done - both male and female. The non-invasive nature of Botox is one of the reasons it remains the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the country.
How popular is Botox?
In 2007, American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reported that the most frequent cosmetic procedure performed in the country was Botox injections, with an estimated 3 million clients opting for the procedure each year. Over ninety percent of those procedures were performed on clients aged 35 to 64 years of age.
Are there any side effects from Botox?
The most common complaints from Botox are nausea and temporary eyelid drooping. Localized pain, swelling, redness, infection, and irritation may be present at the site of the injections temporarily. Side effects are increasingly more severe in people who may have muscle and/or nerve conditions, whether underlying or already diagnosed.
Who should not use Botox?
People who are pregnant, have an active infection, or are allergic to any of the ingredients in Botox should not have the procedure. Additionally, people who are breastfeeding or planning to become pregnant or those with muscle or nerve disorders should check with their health care providers before having Botox injections. Certain over-the-counter and prescription medications can interact with Botox. Therefore, clients who are under a physician's care for a health condition requiring medication should contact their pharmacist regarding any possible interactions between their medicines and the Botox injections.
Administration and Dilution of Botox
Botox is sold in 100 unit vials. It should only be diluted with non-preserved, regular saline, also known as .09% sodium chloride. Dilution with any other agent is neither recommended nor supported. The ratio for dilution of Botox is 2.5mL of saline solution to one 100 unit vial of Botox. The saline solution is to be injected into the Botox vial via syringe. The approved dosage is four units per 0.1mL at each of the five pre-determined injection sites for a total of 20 units per .05mL . DO NOT exceed the recommended dosage or frequency of Botox as the effects are presently unknown and could potentially cause permanent injury or impairment.
